SmartLipo in Depth

1What is SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is a non-invasive fat removal procedure which uses the focused power of laser energy to break up and dissolve fatty tissue trapped beneath the skin. By directing the energy to the area beneath the surface of the skin, the technique also encourages the development of collagen, which results in a tighter, more toned appearance overall. The technique is especially popular because it requires no incisions or general anesthesia, and therefore offers a quick recovery time. SmartLipo also helps treat localized pockets of fat which cannot be effectively treated with traditional liposuction techniques. 2SmartLipo Technology
SMARTLIPO uses the latest advancements in cosmetic surgery technology, which provide a safer, quicker and cost-effective method. Pioneered in Europe, the SmartLipo procedure is the first laser-assisted liposuction procedure. SmartLipo was approved by the FDA in November of 2006 and has quickly been labeled the cutting edge procedure in cosmetic surgery. According to SmartLipo's manufacturer, Cynosure, the SmartLipo system has quickly become one of the most successful liposuction procedures in the cosmetic surgery field for its use of cutting-edge technology. With SmartLipo, a hollow, pen-sized instrument called a cannula is inserted into a minor incision made by the surgeon. The cannula uses a small laser to liquefy the fat cells an area and drain them away. Because the cannula is only about 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm, SmartLipo is a less invasive procedure, reducing the risk of bruising and promoting a quicker recovery. In addition, the cannula's laser acts as a visual guide, helping the surgeon make more precise movements than typical Liposuction. With a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser, the wattage ranges from 6W to 18W, and the higher the wattage allows for a faster procedure. As the laser liquefies fat cells, the laser will simultaneously coagulate small blood vessels, preventing bleeding and swelling. A hollow cannula is also used to suction out the fat cells and speed the recovery process.
3SmartLipo Techniques

Smartlipo Laser Body Sculpting Laserlipolysis

As more women and men want to look and feel better about them selves, body contouring and lipo-sculpture continue to grow in popularity, making liposuction the most popular cosmetic surgery performed today. SmartLipo is the first and only laser-assisted lipolysis system to offer a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of fat. Using a high-powered laser, Smartlipo is a new Laser Body Sculpting procedure with less down time and side effects than traditional liposuction.

How SmartLipo Works

If you're seeking a cutting-edge, highly effective method to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of many surgical techniques, then laser technology is definitely the technique you'll want to consider. Routinely used in dental procedures, lasik eye surgery, reconstructive work and cosmetic procedures-including liposuction-laser technology is what sets SmartLipo apart from its competition. The word "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Precise and safe, today's medical-grade lasers work by creating a powerful light beam that is adjusted to a specific frequency range. SmartLipo is different in that it uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of the patient's skin. The laser actually ruptures fat cells, and the resulting oily, liquid substance is then removed through a tiny incision in the skin by the surgeon. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. Research has shown that little, if any, fat is reabsorbed back into the body. The minimal invasiveness of the procedure allows patients to see faster results and to experience fewer complications. In addition, SmartLipo's patients need only a local anesthetic for this procedure, whereas liposuction requires general anesthesia. Because the patient is not completely unconscious, SmartLipo carries much fewer risks than traditional liposuction, and the recovery time is much shorter. SmartLipo cutting-edge, safe and effective.

How does the Smartlipo procedure work?

A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis it resulting in collagen shrinkage. Due to the cannula's small size, Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, - and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe with only minimal side effects.

Is SmartLipo Right for You?

Almost anyone can be a good candidate for SmartLipo. In general, the ideal candidate: (1) is in good health, exercises regularly, is within 25 lbs. of his or her ideal weight; (2) has one or more areas of local body fat deposits that have responded poorly to diet and exercise; and (3) is bothered by these fatty areas, and is motivated to get rid of them permanently. Your doctor will review the benefits and risks of SmartLipo with you during your consultation visit. He will assess whether you are a good candidate with respect to your medical health, and he will clarify what SmartLipo could do for you. Generally, SmartLipo might be right for you if you don't have a lot of time to spend in recovery. SmartLipo patients are typically back to work within 1 or 2 days following the procedure. Bandages are removed 1 or 2 weeks after that.

  • You've worked hard to eat right and exercise, yet you still can't lose those "love handles" or other fat deposits you consider unsightly. Human fat, or adipose tissue, can be very hard to get rid of through exercise and diet alone. SmartLipo can be a relatively simple solution to remove stubborn fat permanently.
  • You want a procedure that is FDA approved. The SmartLipo device was approved in November of 2006, and today is one of the fasting-growing, safest procedures in the cosmetic surgery field.
  • You don't want loose skin as a result of the procedure. Many patients of traditional liposuction find that their skin does not adjust to the reduction of fat deposits. This tendency often results in unattractive "droops". These patients often require skin lifts that can lead to scars, thus rendering the initial liposuction treatment useless. But by pulling the surrounding skin inward, SmartLipo laser technology can reconstruct the layers immediately under the patient's skin, completely eliminating skin drooping.
  • You want permanent results. Once the fat is removed from a particular area of the body, it will never return. If you gain fat in the future, it will be deposited elsewhere on your body.

To be a good candidate for SmartLipo, you should have realistic expectations about the procedure's capabilities. And while SmartLipo can improve your appearance and self-confidence, it won't necessarily match your mental ideal, nor will it cause other people to act differently toward you. Before you decide to have SmartLipo, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with the physician during your consultation visit. SmartLipo the safe, affordable and permanent alternative.

Who is a good candidate for the SmartLipo procedure?

If you have areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then you're a candidate for SmartLipo. Ideal candidates are in good health, of normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results.

What body regions can be treated with Smartlipo?

Smartlipo can be a great adjunct to traditional liposuction procedures and it is ideal for treating small areas of the face, neck, arms, knees, back, bra strap, mons pubis, breasts (gynecomastia), and areas of loose and flabby skin (floppy skin).

How many treatments will I need?

For most patients, typically only one treatment is required. The session may last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated.

Do I have to do anything post-treatment?

After the treatment you will have minimal pain or bruising. We recommend 1-2 days rest but most patients are able to return to work immediately "Lunch Hour Lipo"

Does Smartlipo treat cellulite?

The procedure will improve the body's shape and may improve cellulite to a certain degree and will tighten sagging skin.

When can I expect to see results?

Results can be seen immediately with continued improvement over several months.

Does laser-assisted liposuction produce lasting results?

Yes! Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, the fat cells expand. The Smartlipo procedure permanently removes the fat cells. Should you gain weight, most fat will be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.

Advantages of Smartlipo

We have chosen Smartlipo after studying the pros and cons of various methods of liposuction. Here are some key points:

Minimal downtime

A few of our patients even return to work immediately, almost like a "lunchtime Liposuction". Of course we normally advise a day or two of rest.

Minimal discomfort

During the procedure, there is no pain. After the anesthesia has worn off, it only feels like the aches and pains that follow a vigorous workout. This is unlike in traditional liposuction where a patient feels as if a truck was driven over the body. The bruises too are much less with Smartlipo.

Less traumatic

The fiber-optic cannula is inserted through a small puncture in the skin usually along creases that conceal the scar. As the laser melts the fats, it also coagulates the loose ends of small blood vessels. Compression garments are optional as the area will not bleed very much after the laser is removed. The granulation tissue (healing-tissues) does the rest of the work in contracting the treated area as well as the overlying skin.

Post-Operative Care:

Almost "normal" skin after 3 months It would be very hard to find the insertion points or tell by looking at the skin that any liposuction has ever been done. Skin contracts with the healing-tissues that replace the melted fats.

Safety and Complications:

Smartlipo is safer than traditional liposuction because there is less bleeding and anesthetic drugs used. In fact, in doing the procedure under tumescent technique, we have eliminated a lot of risks normally associated with general anesthesia.

4Safety and Complications
SmartLipo is an extremely safe procedure. The SmartLipo procedure was approved by the FDA in November of 2006, and a serious life-threatening complication has never resulted from SmartLipo. That is because SmartLipo is performed under local anesthetic, not the much more risky general anesthesia. SmartLipo has been performed thousands of times since being brought to North America in 2005 and has shown itself to be one of the safest cosmetic surgeries available. The SmartLipo procedure is safer than traditional liposuction because there is minimal bleeding and minimal invasion. In addition, only local anesthetic drugs are used in the SmartLipo procedure. There are no extensive stitches or incisions to possibly get infected, and no lengthy hospital stays are required. SmartLipo is an outpatient procedure that is one of the safest and fastest-growing cosmetic surgery options available today. SmartLipo body-contouring results without the traditional risks.
5Body Area Procedures
Because the SmartLipo cannula is so small, SmartLipo can be performed on stomach, love handles, legs, thighs, saddle bags, neck, arms and other trouble areas. SmartLipo can be used anywhere traditional liposuction is used. Body regions that can benefit from the SmartLipo procedure include:
  • Abdomen
  • Areas of loose and flabby skin
  • Back
  • Bra strap
  • Breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Buttocks
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Face
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Mons pubis
  • Neck
  • Thighs (saddle bags)
  • Upper arms
6Post-Operative Care
With SmartLipo, you will begin to recover as soon as the procedure is finished. You will first be escorted to a recovery room, where the doctor will review the procedure and give you instructions on how to take care of your wounds. You will generally be able to return home within two hours after the SmartLipo procedure. You will need to follow your doctor's recovery instructions precisely, and he or she may prescribe minor pain medication. You will also receive compression bandages that are key to the recovery process. They encourage healing by preventing the affected tissues from shifting after the SmartLipo procedure. They can also help prevent your blood from clotting. Following surgery, your doctor may suggest a bit of movement in the following days to promote circulation but limited to only minor activity. In the days after, remember to not take any anti-inflammatory medicines or blood thinners like Aspirin. In addition, it is recommended that you do not smoke for a few days after the procedure. You will heal from SmartLipo in several stages. First, minor bruising and numbness may occur right after the SmartLipo procedure. These side effects should disappear within days, if not hours, of leaving the recovery room. The swelling will go down within a week. At this time you will be able to resume normal activities, or at the request of your doctor. However, once the swelling is gone, your recovery is finished and you will be able view the SmartLipo surgery's final results. After your SmartLipo procedure, your doctor will schedule recovery checkups. During these follow-up visits, he will examine you to make sure they are healing well. It is critical that you keep your appointments as you recover. Doing so will ensure that you heal without scarring and/or infection. Most patients' skin is completely back to normal within three months of the SmartLipo procedure. SmartLipo witness results fast.
7SmartLipo Downtime
It used to take weeks, or even months, of painful healing and limited mobility to recover from traditional liposuction. But with SmartLipo, recovery time is now fast and relatively painless. Patients often return to work within 1 or 2 days of undergoing the SmartLipo procedure. Recovery starts the moment the surgeon turns off the SmartLipo laser. The patient is then escorted to a recovery room, where the local anesthesia can begin to wear off. SmartLipo recovery does not involve the nauseating, disorienting recovery general anesthesia typically brings about, which many people consider the most difficult element of recovering from traditional liposuction. In fact, patients are generally sent home within one hour of the SmartLipo procedure's completion. The doctor will give you specific instructions on how to take care of yourself during recovery after the SmarLipo procedure, and he may give you a prescription for pain medication. You will also receive compression bandages, which are key to recovery. In addition to encouraging healing by preventing the shifting of bodily tissues, they can help prevent blood clots. The goal of SmartLipo recovery is to achieve the best results while reducing the risk of infection. Infection can be the biggest risk during recovery. It can lead to unattractive scars, and possibly serious illness and even death. These rare contingencies, however, are dramatically reduced thanks to SmartLipo's cutting-edge technology. The staff always takes a personal interest in your recovery. They will schedule recovery checkups where one of our doctors will examine your wounds to make sure they are healing properly. It is very important that you keep your appointments as you recover, since professional monitoring improves your chances of smooth, healthy, scar-free results. SmartLipo recovery is made up of several stages. Minor bruising and numbness occur directly after the SmartLipo procedure, but they should disappear within days, if not hours, of leaving the recovery room. The swelling will drop within a week. Once the swelling disappears, your recovery is finished and you will be able view the SmartLipo surgery's final results. SmartLipo you're in; you're out; you're a brand new you.

SmartLipo may be extremely effective for improving upon body areas that have been previously treated with traditional liposuction. With the SmartLipo procedure your doctor can further sculpt or contour those areas on the body that have "droopy" skin, especially if you are a relatively thin, healthy person who wants additional toning and tightening
7What are the main advantages of SmartLipo?
  • It offers the smoothest, best body-contouring results.
